Refashion: Boy Pants to Girly Skirt – Tutorial

Green crafts, Recycle, Sewing  |  August 26th 2011  |  0 Comment

I’ve had a pair of outgrown size 6 boy corduroy pants lying around. Last night I finally decided to do something with them. I tried them on Izzy and they fit around her waist (hooray for adjustable waist pants). Here’s how I transformed a pair of X’s pants into an Izzy approved size 6 skirt.

Refashion: Boy Pants to Girly Skirt – Tutorial

sewing pattern

Step 1: Cut the pant legs.

Step 2: Cut the pant legs open at the seams.

Step 3: Cut the thick seams/hems.

Step 4: Cut four pieces 5″ x 13.5″. Once sewn together this will be twice as wide as the width of the bottom of the skirt.

Step 5: Sew the four pieces together so that you have one long strip. Make sure to either serge or zigzag stitch the hems. Serge or zigzag stitch the bottom edge. Sew the strip to form a circle.

Step 6: Press the bottom 1/2″ and stitch the hem.
Step 7: Using a 1/4″ seam allowance sew a gathering stitch.

Step 8: Gather and pin bottom to skirt. Sew together using a 1/2″ seam allowance.
Step 9: Press the seam up.

Step 10: Topstitch.
