Gift presents: Make A Terrarium

Garden, Home and garden   |  July 25th 2011   |  0 Comment

Terrariums are a fun and versatile way to enjoy landscaping indoors! These small natural arrangements are easy to create and maintain, and the enclosed containers protect them from assaults by kids or pets. This craft is both “green” and inexpensive – you may already have everything you need to make one!

DIY Materials:
Any enclosed container with a bottom, such as a Mason jar, fish bowl, vase, bell jar, hurricane lamp, or covered cake stand. If you don’t own anything suitable, thrift stores usually have a great selection of these items. Glass is ideal, but plastic containers would also work fine.

Drainage material, such as pebbles, sand, or shells

Soil

Small plants or ground cover – moss, grass, clover, or small flowers. You may not need to look further than your own yard! Small succulents like cacti and hens-and-chicks are also ideal for terrariums, and are cheaply available at most hardware stores.

For an artsy touch, add small trinkets, toys, or whatever you want!

DIY Instructions:

1. Place a layer of rocks or other drainage material in the bottom of your glass container. This will prevent your plant(s) from becoming over-saturated.

2. Top the rocks with a generous layer of soil, but leave enough space in the upper part of the container for your plant(s) to spread out!

3. Dig a small hole, if needed, and plant your plant(s) in the soil. If you’re using something flat, like grass sod, just place it on top of the soil and press down lightly.

4. Add anything else you want!

5. When your terrarium is finished, set it in a sunny place. Spritz it with a spray bottle when it looks dry. You can also water it normally, but be very careful not to over-water!

6. Make changes as needed to your terrarium as the plants grow… or just let it evolve!

This is a fun craft to do with friends. I made terrariums with my community group at church, and was inspired by everyone’s creativity! More terrarium ideas are available at Apartment Therapy, Design*Sponge, and elsewhere online.
