Gift presents for girls:   Big Bow Tote Bag tutorial
So this bag is inspired by one of my favorite Etsy finds! I made a quick little tutorial, to share with you guys so you can make one too!
Here is a picture of the bag that inspired me:
To start you will need to cut your pattern pieces.
For the outside of my bag, I used a suede fabric:You’ll need (main fabric):

  • Two pieces  17″ x 15″
  • One piece 10″ x 15″
  • One piece 7″ x 15″
  • One piece 3″ x 26″
  • One piece 2.5″ x 5″

The lining was constructed from a pillow case from a sheet set I got from Target for $3!

 You’ll Need:
  • One piece  14″ x 15″ ( lining fabric)
  • Pocket pieces in your size choice (lining fabric)
  • 3″ x 15″ (main fabric)
Start by finishing both long sides of the bow piece, and one long side of the pocket piece. I used 1/4″ seams.

Pin and sew the bow and outside pocket piece to the outside of the bag. I again used a 1/4″ seams.

Pin the two outside pieces right side together and sew the two sides, and the bottom together. I used 1/2″ seams. Clip corners, flip right side out and set aside.

Sew your pockets to your lining piece.

I make my pockets by taking a piece of fabric the width and twice the height of the pocket I want.

Then fold the pocket in half length wise, with right sides together.

Sew along the three open sides, leaving a two inch gap on the bottom. Flip right side out.

Pin the pocket to the lining, closing the gap on the bottom, sew using 1/4″ seams along the 3 pocket sides, leaving the top open.

Once you have added all the pockets you desire to the main lining pieces you will add the top pieces. (You can see from the pics above I did this first). You can do this in either order. To do this place the strip on top of the lining piece at the top of the bag right sides together. Pin and sew across the top. Do this for both lining pieces.

Put the lining pieces right side together and sew along 3 sides, not the top,
and set aside.

For the strap you are going to iron down 1/2″ on both long sides, and then fold in half and pin. Sew a 1/4″ seam along that side, and then on the other side.
I repeated the same process for that I used for the strap for the center of the bow.

Next iron down the top of both the lining piece and the outside piece about 1/2″.  I pinned mine down, and then ironed. The lining will will have right sides together and the outside piece will have wrong sides together.

You will also pin the strap inside of the lining.

Put the lining inside of the bag, and pin the two together.

Sew a 1/4″ seam around the top, stitching the lining, strap, and the bag together.

Next you will make the gather (bow) on the front of the bag. Gather together and stick a pin through.

Then add a few stitches, to hold together right in the center.

Wrap the thin small fabric piece similar to the strap around the center. And hand stitch that strap together at the back.

That’s it! Enjoy your bag!!
