<p>A hunt through my fabric stash and I found an old t-shirt that didn&#8217;t flatter me any longer, don&#8217;t rule out your old clothes when hunting for fabric!  So here is the t-shirt I started with-..</p>

<h3>Paper crafts for kids: Happy 4th!</h3>
<div><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vkkLrXvfPiQ/TgUjH_iiUHI/AAAAAAAABJY/zetVDBqpzMo/s640/4th+of+July-p001.jpg" alt="" width="440" height="640" border="0" /></div>
<p>I came up with these cute fireworks after being inspired by Martha Stewart.<br />
I made quite a few changes of my own but you&#8217;ve got to give credit where credit is due.</p>
<div>  Tools needed:</div>
<div> <img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--88lJZErBEo/TgP_03bgAcI/AAAAAAAABIY/wdSFW-T9bt8/s320/IMG_4320.JPG" alt="" width="212" height="320" border="0" /></div>
<div>I choose to use 12x 12 glittered card stock for my fireworks, you can use whatever makes you happy.</div>
<div>I picked up red, blue and teal from Hobby Lobby. 1 12&#215;12 sheet will make you 4 fireworks.</div>
<div>Start by cutting the card stock in half making 2-12&#215;6 pieces.</div>
<div><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aa80-y5xUKI/TgP_3NA9zsI/AAAAAAAABIc/lvBrwSjEtuc/s320/IMG_4323.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>I used a rotary cutter instead of scissors to make my cuts, either would work. Make 1/4 inch cuts leaving around and inch at the top uncut.</div>
<div><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-otSM8PP3kgE/TgP_5m3xipI/AAAAAAAABIg/poRbNtIqrLo/s320/IMG_4324.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>I slid my stick between a few layers just to show you what the cuts look like.</div>
<div><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dmHbczcWL40/TgP_7GW7IlI/AAAAAAAABIk/WBWXnitQ31E/s320/IMG_4326.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>Here is the back side, its a little easier to see whats going on here without all that glitter.</div>
<div><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z-r8eTUfKXg/TgP_8LOQYrI/AAAAAAAABIo/BJoJHEGXIpg/s320/IMG_4327.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WvPq9KXYbis/TgP_80cbh6I/AAAAAAAABIs/L4DBgxgYcNs/s320/IMG_4332.JPG" alt="" width="212" height="320" border="0" /></div>
<div>Now cut that piece in half again, making 2- 6&#215;6 pieces.</div>
<div><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9GtFugF-Szs/TgP_93rDomI/AAAAAAAABIw/VpOC4ecXceM/s320/IMG_4334.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>Pre-curl your paper before you glue it on the stick, very helpful step!</div>
<div><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sb7p-j9YRfU/TgP_-wD1FCI/AAAAAAAABI0/4HDZNYFBZvw/s320/IMG_4335.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>Use a shish kabob stick and super glue the paper around your stick. Just glue and roll as tight as you can.</div>
<div><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jS7swmMgE2s/TgQAAJs7LrI/AAAAAAAABI4/SIr5_Wn3-M8/s320/IMG_4339.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>Here is what it looks like when it&#8217;s all rolled up.</div>
<div><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_WvuukOC2Mk/TgQABDtKbYI/AAAAAAAABI8/g5A3eY0ILgg/s320/IMG_4340.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>I left some of my fireworks straight and I make some of them curl. Use a pencil or a pen and wrap the paper strips around it to make the curled effect.</div>
<div><img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mwSj5lH-3kY/TgQACR2itAI/AAAAAAAABJA/5MB0HLom5gE/s320/IMG_4343.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>Fireworks!!</div>
<div><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MM2lhTzwFoQ/TgQADU1eAGI/AAAAAAAABJE/5l65QjXuShQ/s320/IMG_4347.JPG" alt="" width="212" height="320" border="0" /></div>
<p>Next I put my fireworks into canning jars, I liked the effect but you could use any jar or container you want.</p>
<p>Next I filled my jars 3/4 full of sand, again anything you want to use will work. I like that sand is heavy and my fireworks ,hopefully, wont fall over.</p>
<div>I ordered these cool 4th of July straws from Isakay Boutique on Etsy.</div>
<div>I choose red &amp; blue stars and red &amp; blue stiped straws.</div>
<div><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fj9lvxSWJFw/TgQHXJ5bwUI/AAAAAAAABJI/ojox3cxPpgw/s320/Star+Starws.jpg" alt="" width="320" height="272" border="0" /></div>
<div><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YwJDdKd2_C0/TgQHXQNejBI/AAAAAAAABJM/kZeTf3ljndU/s320/staws+red+and+blue.jpg" alt="" width="214" height="320" border="0" /></div>
<div>Take a straw and slide it onto your stick before you put the firework into the jar.</div>
<div><img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ixDClb0SZbc/TgUjaG4AapI/AAAAAAAABJk/sjp4uaA4PF8/s320/IMG_4386.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>I put 5 fireworks into each of my jars.</div>
<div> <img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0bprCkpyfO4/TgUjX4V90QI/AAAAAAAABJc/piABljNsl4A/s320/IMG_4375.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div> Now to embellish your jar. I cut 2 circles out with my sizzix.</div>
<div>I ran the white circle through my crimper. I also cut out a star with one of</div>
<div>my little star punches. All this can be done by hand if you don&#8217;t have the right tools,</div>
<div>well except the crimping.</div>
<div><img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MSBV1908SGM/TgUjbMuzooI/AAAAAAAABJo/JU0tj01mIfI/s320/IMG_4407.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>I used hot glue to glue the ribbon around the jar.</div>
<div>Just glue the backside not all the way around because it will look funny.</div>
<div>You can use tape if you want to reuse your jars later.</div>
<div>I did not want the ribbon to come off while being moved so I used hot glue.</div>
<div> <img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QfSaY6pNr50/TgUjZB6meHI/AAAAAAAABJg/OhgCuMmnx2Q/s320/IMG_4376.JPG" alt="" width="320" height="212" border="0" /></div>
<div>Now you&#8217;re done!! What an awesome 4th of July center piece.</div>
<div>I sure am excited to <a href="http://beingcreativetokeepmysanity.blogspot.com">use </a>mine. I actually made 5 jars for</div>
<div>the party we are having next weekend.</div>

<p>I have been waiting very patiently to show these to you!  I had this idea months ago and have been working on them, but I didn&#8217;t want to show them too far in advance of the 4th of July, or &#8220;America Day&#8221; as my daughter so aptly calls it!But here they are&#8230;my <strong>4th of July Star Topiaries</strong>!!  (or should I call them &#8220;America Day Topiaries! hahaha!)These are so super simple to make.  But they do take a little bit of time.  But it was well worth the time it took because I think they are so cute!</p>

</div>
</div>
<h2>Recycling ideas and tutorial for Father&#8217;s day: A TIE-NY TOKEN OF APPRECIATION</h2>
<div>so grab a old tie from years past and a key ring&#8230;that&#8217;s all you&#8217;ll need for this!&#8230;well&#8230;some scissors and glue too&#8230;oh&#8230;you might notice that this isn&#8217;t the same tie in the original pic&#8230;well&#8230;after finishing that one&#8230;i realized that i hadn&#8217;t taken any pics along the way&#8230;so i had to grab a stand-in for the tutorial&#8230;just think of it as a stunt tie&#8230;.<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2431/5821309983_7ec41c4964.jpg" alt="materials needed" width="400" height="324" /></p>
<p>take the narrow tail end of the tie and pull it through the ring&#8230;about five inches&#8230;make sure the seam of the tie is facing down&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2344/5821874690_72be3830c7.jpg" alt="step 1" width="400" height="300" /></p>
<p>fold tail sideways&#8230;so it is pointing to right&#8230;now you&#8217;ll be able to see the seams&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3008/5821875494_f70e545a7b.jpg" alt="step 2" width="400" height="300" /></p>
<p>wrap the tail over the top of the tie&#8230;where it folds through the ring&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2769/5821312265_0c20646eca.jpg" alt="step 3" width="400" height="300" /></p>
<p>keep on wrapping the tail around the ring&#8230;until the seam shows&#8230;this should look like a knot on a tie&#8230;well&#8230;a teenie tie&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2642/5821313039_3636573696.jpg" alt="step 4" width="400" height="300" /></p>
<p>pull the tail through the ring&#8230;.</p>
<p><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2642/5821877862_3db8e426bf.jpg" alt="step 5" width="400" height="300" /></p>
<p>and down through the &#8220;knot&#8221;&#8230;.</p>
<p><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5229/5821878642_0fcc9f4f33.jpg" alt="step 7" width="400" height="284" /></p>
<p>grab the ring and the tie&#8230;pull on both to tighten&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3349/5821315327_4644b06aec.jpg" alt="step 8" width="400" height="307" /></p>
<p>flip your tie over&#8230;.</p>
<p><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3205/5821880046_f130255d60.jpg" alt="step 9" width="400" height="287" /></p>
<p>grab your scissors and snip all the excess off&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2431/5821316833_cd14bc6406.jpg" alt="step 10" width="400" height="300" /></p>
<p>how much to cut off?&#8230;well&#8230;try to end up with it looking like this&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2427/5821910210_8a84b9bfd9.jpg" alt="step 11" width="400" height="312" /></p>
<p>snip off the edges to mimic the front of tie&#8230;or&#8230;you can totally leave it blunt cut&#8230;then add some glue to the edges&#8230;to stop the fraying&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3603/5821910956_c7c004846e.jpg" alt="step 12" width="400" height="300" /></p>
<p>here&#8217;s how it should look all done up on the back!&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5030/5821347167_2a449e0639.jpg" alt="back of finished project" width="400" height="309" /></p>
<p>and here&#8217;s the frontal shot!&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3336/5821954464_ae5280ec78.jpg" alt="finished project" width="400" height="333" /></p>
<p>now&#8230;it&#8217;s time to add the keys!&#8230;i mean&#8230;what&#8217;s a keychain without &#8216;em?&#8230;i used my cricut and a design studio cut file to do up these keys&#8230;then stamped with the perfect sentiments!&#8230;</p>
<p><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3367/5822026334_4f0dded93e.jpg" alt="076" width="400" height="328" /></p>
<p>you know&#8230;.father&#8217;s day isn&#8217;t the only occasion for these <a href="http://thegreenbeanscrafterole.blogspot.com/2011/06/tie-ny-token-of-appreciation.html">tie</a>-ny tokens of appreciation&#8230;.anytime you need a male sorta giftie&#8230;these would be perfect!&#8230;</p>

<p>A little while back, I was brainstorming Father’s Day craft ideas, and I had one of those “a-ha” moments. Don’t you just love those? These Father’s Day Shirt &amp; Tie Gift Boxes actually make use of the <a href="http://www.nonpareilmag.com/issues/issue-001/nonpareil-01-a-bevy-of-beautiful-boxes/" target="_blank">favor box template</a> that I created for my feature in the first issue of Nonpareil, with an alteration made to add a “collar”. I’ve provided a necktie template (and a bow tie template, in case your dad or husband is a bow tie kind of guy) that you can use with any patterned or solid colored paper to put the finishing touch on your own box(es). And now I’m thinking about all of the other holidays for which I can customize the template, so don’t be surprised if you see more projects that make use of it in the future!</p>

<p><strong>Father’s Day Shirt &amp; Tie Gift Boxes</strong></p>
<p>Supplies you’ll need:<br />
<a href="http://www.papercrave.com/downloads/fathers-day-tie-gift-box.pdf"><br />
gift box template + bow tie / necktie template</a><br />
a printer<br />
cardstock for the box and tie(s)*<br />
scissors<br />
a ruler<br />
a pen or pencil<br />
glue dots<br />
double-sided tape<br />
1/4 inch circle hole punch (for bow tie box)<br />
a scoring tool (optional)<br />
a cutting mat (optional)</p>
<p>Print the <a href="http://www.papercrave.com/downloads/fathers-day-tie-gift-box.pdf">box template</a> onto lightweight cardstock, cut out along the solid lines, and assemble according to the directions found in the template file. Place your gift in the box, and use double-sided tape or glue dots to securely close the flap. Print bow tie/necktie templates, cut out, and trace onto your choice of patterned or solid colored paper. Cut out the tie(s) and attach to the box flap using double stick tape or glue dots. If making the bow tie box, punch out three 1/4 inch “buttons” using a hole punch, and attach to the front of the box using glue dots (small Zots are the perfect size).</p>
<p><strong>Alternative directions:</strong> Assemble the box and attach the tie to the top flap first, and add your gift last.</p>
<p>These boxes will hold a variety of small Father’s Day gifts, including watches, fishing lure, small food treats, gift cards, and tech gadgets like iPod Nanos or USB thumb drives.</p>
