Eco gifts: mini garden for kids (How To: Create a Terrarium )

Garden, Natural crafts  |  September 23rd 2011  |  0 Comment

I love the idea of having a living gift for someone. Recently, some very nice people have done super thoughtful things for me, and I wanted to say thank you with a little something, something.

To create a Terrarium, start by assembling what you need:

  • variety of succulent plants, different sizes
  • pretty glass container
  • rocks, small rocks for drainage, large rocks for decoration
  • sand
  • cactus soil
  • fertilizer

  1. Assemble all of your materials. You can find glass containers at Pier 1 or Michael’s. If you go to Michael’s, you can also get rocks and sand.
  2. Layer 1 – Rocks. You want to make sure they’re small, so the soil doesn’t fall to the bottom.
  3. Layer 2 – Soil. The thickest layer to cover all of the roots. If you have fertilizer, spread it on this layer.
  4. Plant your goodies. I used Sempervivum and Eucalyptus. If you have more room, I also like Sedum.
  5. Layer 3 – Sand. Spread it around, and make sure to brush the excess of your plants.
