Homemade Soft Modeling Clay

For the start of Family Day weekend, I made soft modeling clay for my one-and-a-half year old niece to play with. She loved it. She loves poking it, kneading it, and rolling it. Right now she’s learning her colours. Currently, she calls all the colours “red”!

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon cream of tartar (found in the spice/baking aisle at most grocery stores)
  • Food colourings
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup flour, plus extra for kneading
Step 1
In a sauce pan, whisk together water, salt, and cream of tartar.

Step 2
Add a few drops of food colouring and vegetable oil.

Next, cook on low heat.

Step 3
Once the mixture heats up, mix in 1 cup of flour.

Step 4
Use a wooden spoon to stir. Stir the mixture until it becomes a soft dough that is elastic but not sticky.

Step 5
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it is smooth.

Step 6
Repeat steps 1-5 for other colours.
