Baby favor: Make your own elephant softie, sewing patterns

This is a little elephant softie I made for my daughter. I wanted to try to design something myself rather than use a pattern from someone else. I think it turned out cute though the next time I will make one, I’ll definitely make double seams for more endurance.

Here is how to make an elephant of your own:

  1. Download the free pattern, print it on letter size paper and cut out. (The original is made for Din A4, but that should not be a problem.)
  2. Cut out the following pieces from your fabric: 2x elephant body, 2x elephant legs (up to the dotted line), 4x ears, 1x head-piece. Make sure to add a seam allowance.
  3. Lay two ears together, rights sides together, pin and sew the rounded part  twice to make the seam more sturdy (leaving the straight part open). Repeat with the other pieces. Trim and clip the seam allowances and turn the ears right sides out.
  4.  Fold the seam allowances of the open part into the ears and pin them onto the body of the elephant. If the position looks good, sew back and forth a few times. The ears were the first part to rip off of my elephant.
  5. Lay a leg onto the body of the elephant, right sides together, pin together and sew. Repeat with the other side.
  6. Lay one body piece onto the other, right sides together, pin and sew from the elephant’s behind (just where the seam on the leg starts) to point B.
  7. Pin and sew the headpiece onto one of the body pieces, making sure that points A and B match. Then sew to the other piece.
  8. Sew the seam from point A around the trunk to the front leg.
  9. Now comes the tricky part: Trim back the seam allowances and clip the edges enough to make turning possible but not so much that the edge of the fabric frays and the elephant falls apart. Turn the pieces right sides out, poking fabric of the trunk ever so gently with a pen or a chopstick.
  10. Stuff your elephant with filling and close the seam on the elephants tummy.
  11. With a pencil mark where you want the eyes to be. Either use a fabric marker to draw them or stitch them on. You’re done!
